Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, also known as Tsukuyomi or Tsukiyomi, is the moon god in Japanese mythology and the Shinto religion. The name Tsukuyomi is derived from the Old Japanese words tsuku (moon, month) and yomi (reading, counting). The Nihon Shoki mentions the name spelled as Tsukuyumi, which could be a variation in pronunciation of yomi. Another interpretation is that her name is a combination of tsukiyo (moonlit night) and mi (looking, watching).
